Forever Is a Calling, Not a Vacation

You won’t be bored forever. You’ll be busy forever — in the best way.

A lot of people imagine eternity as an endless vacation — lying around doing nothing, forever. That sounds great for about a week. Then it sounds like a prison.

The Bible says something far better: “his servants shall serve him” (Revelation 22:3), and “they shall reign for ever and ever” (v. 5). Serve and reign. Not floating. Not idle. Purposeful, joyful work — forever.

Work Was Never the Curse

Work existed before sin. In Eden, before anything went wrong, “the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it” (Genesis 2:15). Work was part of paradise.

What the curse did was make work frustrating — thorns, sweat, and exhaustion (Genesis 3:17–19). In the new creation, the curse is gone. Imagine creativity without burnout, leadership without corruption, and effort without exhaustion.

Kings and Priests

Heaven’s song to Jesus says He has “made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:10). Kings lead. Priests worship and bring others near to God. That’s the job description of every believer. Paul even asks, “Know ye not that we shall judge angels?” (1 Corinthians 6:3).

Discovery Without End

Forever never gets old, because God never runs out. He saved us so “that in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us” (Ephesians 2:7). Ages — plural. You’ll know Him better every day, and there will always be more.

The nations will “bring the glory and honour of the nations into” the city (Revelation 21:26) — the best of every culture, offered to God. So the gifts God put in you may be a hint of how you’ll serve Him forever. The details aren’t spelled out, but the work will be good.
