Heaven Is Not Boring

Forget clouds and harps. God is making a whole new world.

Michael Kendrick · Scripture: King James Version

Be honest. When you hear the word heaven, what do you picture? For a lot of people it’s fluffy clouds, people with wings, a harp you don’t know how to play, and a worship service that lasts ten thousand years. If that’s heaven, no wonder nobody’s in a hurry to get there.

Here’s the good news: almost none of that is in the Bible.

Two Stops, Not One

When a believer dies, the Bible says they go to be “present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). That’s real, it’s wonderful, and it’s fully conscious — Jesus told the thief on the cross, “To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). But that isn’t the final destination. Think of it as the waiting room.

The final destination is what John saw at the end of the Bible: a new heaven and a new earth. A real world. Real ground under your feet. Real bodies. A real city. Peter says we “look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13) — a world where everything is finally right.

All Things New

Think about what that means. Everything you love about this world — the ocean at sunset, mountains after rain, a great meal with friends, music that gives you chills — those are previews. God isn’t going to throw His creation away. He’s going to make it new. “Behold,” Jesus says from the throne, “I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5). Not all new things. All things new.

And it gets better. Paul borrows a line from the prophet Isaiah to describe what God has in store for His people:

Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. — 1 Corinthians 2:9 (KJV)

Whatever the best moment of your life has been so far, God has something better prepared. Boring? The God who invented color, flavor, laughter, and music is not planning to bore you forever.
